Allocation Volunteers
Interested in becoming a United Way NZ Allocation Volunteer?United Way NZ (UWNZ) is an independent, non-religious, non-political, not for profit volunteer based organisation that works alongside individuals, corporations, businesses and the community in order to improve quality of life through voluntary action and giving.
Approximately 150 volunteers nationwide donate their time to UWNZ’s governance and operations. Most of this volunteer effort is as “Allocation Volunteers” to assist with distributing the Community Chest Fund to local community charities.
United Way NZ supports small to medium-sized charities that work in the
priority areas of:
- Helping children and youth succeed
- Strengthening and assisting families
- Supporting the vulnerable and elderly
- Promoting wellness, independence and self sufficiency
By visiting each charity that applies for funding UWNZ Allocation Volunteers play a key role in deciding what funds should be allocated. UWNZ believes that seeing a charity in action and meeting the people involved is the best way to determine who deserves to receive funding.
As an Allocation Volunteer you will be given training and then placed in an area team, and allocated two or three charities to visit with another UWNZ volunteer.
You then contact the charity concerned, and arrange a mutually convenient time for you and your Allocation Volunteer partner to visit. These visits take place during March and April each year (involving approximately 15 hours).
After the visit you and your volunteer partner write up a brief report covering your findings and recommendations. Once your team has completed all its visits you will meet as a team to discuss your recommendations and decide how much of the area budget should be allocated to each charity.
Not all charities that apply for funding from UWNZ will receive grants. It is the Allocation Volunteers responsibility to determine, through the evaluation visit, whether or not a charity should receive a grant; and if so, for how much.
This is a great opportunity for you to play a small but significant part in making a difference in your community. Contact United Way NZ (09) 377-2544 or email reception@unitedway.org.nz.
