It is with pleasure that I provide this message for United Way New Zealand’s 2007-2008 Annual Report. For 33 years, United Way New Zealand and its 150 dedicated volunteers from Warkworth to the Bluff, have worked to improve the lives of New Zealanders in need. United Way focuses on helping small-to-medium charities that are efficiently and effectively meeting real needs, but which simply lack the public profile to ensure that they receive sufficient funding. It provides an important link to match the goodwill of New Zealanders with those in the community who need support. In this sense, United Way works to “help the helpers” and in the last year I am advised it provided grants to 118 local welfare charities in 10 regions throughout New Zealand. I am also advised that the organisation facilitated about $44,000 of voluntary time and about $25,000 worth of gifts in kind were given to those in need. As Governor-General of New Zealand and Patron of United Way New Zealand, I commend the organisation, its board, staff and volunteers for their ongoing work to make our country a better place for all.
